Believers Against The War was founded to challenge all Christian believers to examine the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq in the light of the Bible and the Constitution - both of which prohibit unprovoked aggression. We hold the same position on the occupation of Afghanistan.
Today, many of God's people have forsaken the gospel of Christ and turned their hearts toward the corrupted teachings of men. Political allegiances have been bought in exchange for the love of sound doctrine - many have gone astray.
We bring this admonition to our fellow believers: The pre-invasion warnings given about the imminent threat posed by Iraq were complete fabrications - making our unprovoked attack an ungodly, immoral, and unconstitutional act of war. It is imperative that we pull our combat troops out immediately!
As to Afghanistan, whatever motives we used to justify our original invasion are no longer valid. Our continued presence their country is no longer justified either morally or constitutionally.
As a result of the invasions, thousands of the finest men and women this country has ever put forth are now dead - while nearly a trillion dollars have been borrowed, printed or stolen from us in order to fund these illegal, ill-conceived, nation building calamities. In addition to our own losses, so many tens of thousands of Iraqi and Afghan civilians have been killed that we lost count.
A religion of American global hegemony is rapidly superceding our call to the "Great Commission."
Contrary to a doctrine of war-making, Jesus summed up His gospel with this: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself." We can be confident that our country's aggressive and outrageous behavior toward Iraq is in direct conflict with both of those commands.
When these wars are finally over, and it will end, we cannot simply walk away and say, "We're sorry." There are going to be consequences for our occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. We need to be praying for the wisdom to know how we can make amends to the Iraqi people for the unbelievable death and destruction our occupations have causes.
What You Can Do:
Learn What the Bible Has to Say About Peace: Jesus spoke of peace and love, not warfare and conquest - and we need to start learning how to live peacefully with our neighbors. God's people can no longer hide behind Romans 13 to excuse their complicity in the war crimes being committed by those who rule us.
Talk to Your Pastor: The pro-war fanaticism of many evangelical church leaders can no longer be ignored - or tolerated. They preach messages of love, and most claim to be pro-life, yet they can somehow ignore - or even support - the carnage we have rained down on the Iraqi people. Arrange a meeting to discuss the war with your pastor.
Protest in a Public Place: The rulers of this sinking ship may no longer be listening to the people, but it is our duty, as well as our God-given right, to speak out when we see injustice. Our country is being stolen right out from under us - and silence is no longer an option.
Contact Your Congressman: Most of them were complicit in the invasion of Iraq in one way or another. America sent a clear message last November - Get out NOW! Apparently, most of them did not get the message, and cowardice seems to rule the day. In the end, however, they will do whatever it takes to stay in office - so, write them a letter, make a call, visit their office. Be a pest! Find yours here.
Contact the Media: Write letters to your newspaper; call into radio talk shows. Tell Rush, Sean, Lars, et al, that you have figured out the scam, that you know our "two" party system is all a charade, and that you aren't going to take it lying down anymore! Here are some media contacts.
Learn the Facts About Our Military: The U.S. Constitution (Article 1, Section 8) grants Congress the exclusive power to fund and regulate the military, and to declare war. The president has NONE of those powers. However, Congress was granted no authority to wage war against countries that did not attack us first, making the invasion of Iraq totally illegal, regardless of the ill-conceived, unconstitutional 2002 "Use of Force Resolution."
All commissioned military officers swear an oath to defend the U.S. Constitution. They do not swear an oath to become part of an imperialist fighting force, at the beck and call of the madmen who have seized control of our government. Their oath says: “I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”
We need to encourage our military officers to obey their oath, which would give them the authority to put an end to illegal invasions and occupations. (If they really wanted to obey their oaths, they would be turning their forces toward Washington DC, where the real enemies of our Constitution have taken over!)
“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” 1Tomothy 2, 1-2
Pray For Peace: Ask for God's intervention to end the war. The bible admonishes believers to live in peace:
Pray For Our Soldiers: Pray for their safety of mind and body. Read Psalm 91. Pray against fear, loneliness, guilt, suffering, depression, frustration and discouragement. Pray for courage, strength, peace and healing.
Pray For Our Soldier's Families: Pray for peace, courage, wisdom and trust. “For You are my rock and my fortress; therefore, for Your name’s sake, lead me and guide me.” Psalm 31:3; “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
Pray For Our Leaders: Pray that our leaders will obey the Bible and the Constitution! Pray that they will engage our troops only when America has been attacked (legitimately) and/or war is declared upon it. Pray that our leaders would use caution, wisdom and respect for our U.S. military personnel and other governments. Pray that our leaders would seek peace.
Pray For Iraq and Afghanistan: Pray that the Iraqi and Afghan people could live in peace. Pray for the families of the tens/hundreds of thousands who have died as a result of our occupation. Pray that the various factions could lay aside their differences and unite to rebuild their country.
Pray For Repentance: Pray that our President would repent for the many thousands who have died as a result of his recklesness. Pray that our Congress would repent for authorizing the invasion of a country that posed no threat to America. Pray that His people would repent for their wicked ways, for their support of the war in Iraq, and the occupationion of Afghanistan, and for their willingness to accommodate the evil that permeates from every level of our government.
Pray For Mercy: The political solutions we seek will continue to fail us. That is a given. Our only hope is in Jesus Christ and the blood He shed for our sins. It is time for His people to get on their knees and beg for mercy, as the innocent blood we have shed in these foreign occupations has stained all of our hands.
In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his vassal for three years. Then he turned and rebelled against him. And the Lord sent against him raiding bands of Chaldeans, bands of Syrians, bands of Moabites, and bands of the people of Ammon; He sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord which He had spoken by His servants the prophets. Surely at the commandment of the Lord this came upon Judah, to remove them from His sight because of the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he had done, and also because of the innocent blood that he had shed; for he had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, which the Lord would not pardon. 2 Kings 24:1-4
